This application is to develop our Peer to Peer support service for people living with a current cancer diagnosis, as well as cancer survivors now in remission.
COVID-19 has led to a dramatic increase in isolation and loneliness amongst vulnerable people. This includes, not least, those living with cancer in the UK; at Yes to Life we are now seeking funding to expand our services and support these individuals.
Cancer patients were classified as extremely clinically vulnerable to COVID-19 in March 2020. As a result of this classification, many cancer patients/survivors have now been isolated from their support networks for over a year. A 2013 report by Macmillan Cancer Support stated that 1 in 4 cancer patients experienced depression, and 23% felt they lacked help and support from family and friends. These numbers are likely to have increased due to the effects of national lockdowns.
The Peer to Peer programme, will match participants (beneficiaries and pper supporters) with shared experiences which will make it easy for them to find common ground; this thereby will make this service hugely successful at rebuilding the identity and confidence of those who may feel isolated from family and friends after their diagnosis or during treatment.
