Create a brand new female-led tourable and profitable original dance show and original score

by Nancy Hitzig in London, England, United Kingdom

They are an award-winning, exceptional and amazing all-female dance troupe. SIX international women who all offer skill, killer jazz and amazing lindy hop. The problem is that some want out.

In a new business venture, Swing Sister Swing launches an original 60 minute dance show built from the story up: six powerful women with a banging original score (composed by Two Twenty Two) exploring what it means to be a woman and alone in the world of Lindy Hop. Through previous experiments, I have proven that there IS an audience and commissioning opportunities for lindy hop dance shows and this is the beginning of a tourable, nimble and cost effective show that could generate income from ticket sales, commissions, licensing fees, sponsorship and grants. This is a brand new and never been done before venture for me and my swing dance practice! Thanks to initial support from Arts Council England, the Canadian High Commission, 80 generous crowdfunding supporters and box office sales we have the chance to make a strong show to tour and generate new commissions! We present Swing, Sister, Swing in The Studio on 12th & 13th July at Rich Mix, the culture capital of East London. It such a risk to put this production on and to try something brand new, we would love your help.

Swing Sister Swing will employ 22 women - these are 16 freelance musicians, Daisy Coole, our composer and 6 professional artists. And it is only the beginning, the first and a key opportunity to generate income and opportunities for female artists to present original swing dance across England.

Please help us with that ambition to assemble an all-female, all star big band - a cast of 6 exceptional female performers and show the world what is possible to explore through lindy hop narrative dance and how it can turn a profit.

Your support will fund:
-a 16 piece all female, all star, big band record our score
-rehearsals and 3 performances of an original devised narrative dance show
-a commissioned workshop for 30 young people at the U Dance festival at the Southbank on 21 July part of One Dance UK's annual youth dance celebration
-video materials and essential promotional packages for regional promoters
-help us build a tourable, scaleable show to tour in 2020
-licensing opportunities for the work to be performed elsewhere

We have already raised £2,600 towards this project and additional funding from Nat West Back Her Business would be transformative around promoting and producing the show. It would also allow us to reinvest box office income into a profitable tour in 2020.

Whether you can contribute a fiver, or have the means to contribute to a whole section of musicians, we welcome and appreciate any amount, and feel so supported by our friends, fellow dancers and peers. We'd also love to see you: join us to toast great music and great art on 12th & 13th July. It promises to be an exciting journey.

Thank you to our partners: Rich Mix, Arts Council England National Lottery Project Grants and English National Ballet and the 80+donors who have backed this project.
