Sustainable Development in Rural Nicaragua

Working with young people to establish sustainable livelihoods, develop community resilience and raise living standards in rural Nicaragua

Unfortunately, this project was not successful

Hello, my name is Matty and this summer I will be living in Nicaragua for a 10 week period, carrying out sustainable development work with the charity Raleigh international.  The placement is funded by the government (flights, visas, living expenses etc.) however once accepted onto the program all volunteers are asked to fundraise in aid of the charity, I have a target of £1,500 and any support would be more than greatly appreciated!

I  am currently studying for a degree in International Development and Spanish (spoken in Nicaragua) at the University of Leeds and so through this placement I hope not only to improve the lives of young people within deprived communities, but also to gain development experience which will be essential in pursuing my ambition for a career in overseas development.

This will be no holiday and I can assure you I will not be travelling all that way to 'find myself'. In partnership with ICS, Raleigh International continue to work to transform the lives of people around the globe and ensure that the most basic human rights can be met. The charity works in three main areas in order to create positive and long-lasting change: providing access to safe water and sanitation, protecting vulnerable environments, and building livelihoods.

The program trains young people from around the world and equips them with the appropriate knowledge and skills to work efficiently and effectively with young people from under-privileged communities in order to develop community resilience and improve living conditions. On a day to day basis I will be working with fellow young people in order to develop their livelihoods, improve their businesses skills, and hopefully provide them with the opportunity to raise their own standards of living.

Thanks for reading my message and an even bigger thank you to everyone contributing to my fundraising effort!
