A brand new sensory course for people with MS
We did it
On 20th December 2019 we successfully raised £1,750 with 7 supporters in 31 days

To develop and run a sensory and strengthening course to help people with MS walk better and improve mobility

by Berkshire MS Therapy Centre in Reading, England, United Kingdom

New stretch target

The extra money will help us to develop and run more symptom-specific targeted classes for people with MS such as problems with balance, bladder and muscle weakness as well as additional . Everything we do is planned around the current needs of our members. This funding will allow us to act quickly and take advantage of opportunities as they arise.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a life changing condition. It affects how your brain and body communicate with each other. This can cause big mobility problems. With your help and support today we can develop a brand new course that will keep our members walking stronger, safer and longer.

What we currently offer

The main service we offer is physiotherapy and exercise which is designed for people with MS.

Through a tailored programme, people can exercise safely. It is designed to challenge enough to be beneficial but geared so it doesn’t cause other symptoms to flare up. To meet our members’ needs, our experienced team will provide group and one-to-one sessions adjusted to the goals and ability of the individuals taking part.

In 2019 our members were asked about the difference physiotherapy makes and they told us:

•             79% feel more mobile as a result of physiotherapy

•             83% felt it helps with depression

•             89% find it helps their day to day life

•             94% report it improves their quality of life

•             85% feel it gives them the confidence to cope with their MS

With your help today what we can achieve

In 2020 we plan to develop a new 8 week course that focuses on sensory and strengthening exercises to help our members with their walking. Based on what we learn we will adapt the class so can replicate it in the future.

Why this is important

The foot has 26 bones, 33 joints as well as many sensory receptors in the skin, muscles, tendons and joints to help with movement, balance and shock absorption.

In MS the sensory information may already be disturbed, but the less we move and stimulate the feet, the less information we send to sensory cortex. This means our foundation on the ground will work less effective and may cause issues further up in the body.

This course will contain both strengthening and sensory exercises for the foot and ankle.

With your help we can develop a new course based on sensory and strengthening exercises to help improve mobility that we can recreate time after time.

 Thank you!
