Thank you to everyone who has supported Udayan Care with our suggestion to make donations in place of wedding gifts. We have been humbled by the support for the idea, and have raised over £500 to date. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported us so far, and we will post updates here. We are also continuing to raise money for this organisation, and we will deliver all donations received in person when we next visit India around Diwali in 2019. Our aim is to raise ₹100,000 by this time (approximately £1,100).
This campaign has now closed, but if you missed it and would still like to help us reach our target then we have opened a new Crowdfunder project here.
Recent estimates suggest that there may be as many as 20 million orphaned or abandoned children in India.
These children may have been abused, and there is little chance for adoption. Many therefore end up on the streets or in government-run institutionalised care, often until adulthood. Conditions in these institutions can be very poor, and abuse often continues.
In this environment, these children have little chance of a decent childhood, education or future.
We are therefore supporting Udayan Care, who provide a safe home environment for orphaned and abandoned children. It started with a single family home (Ghar) in Delhi in 1996, and has now touched the lives of over 21,000 children throughout India.
As well as providing safe homes, Udayan Care also runs education programmes for girls and IT training programmes for disadvantaged children.
More details can be found on their website: www.udayancare.org
All money raised will go directly to Udayan Care to support their important work.
We thank you deeply for your support.
