Ever since its establishment in 2010, CHOICE (Cambridge Hong Kong Operation for International Children’s Education) has grown to be a dynamic and widely-respected student society across the Cambridge community. Founded upon a firm belief that students have a social responsibility to give back to the wider community, we have constantly strived to make a difference through our involvement in local and international development work, particularly in the area of education.
In terms of our international service work, over the past eight years, we have not only sent students to various developing countries, such as Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and Nepal, during vacation breaks to engage firsthand in development and educational initiatives, but also fundraised for the communities and organisations we work with. Through our efforts, we aspire to provide new learning experiences to children who were not born with the same opportunities as us, and to help communities develop their capabilities and fulfil their livelihood objectives.
Since last year, CHOICE has been collaborating with the Rural Education and Environment Development Centre (REED) in Nepal, which share our vision of equality and quality in education. Our service trip this year will involve visiting three schools in the Nepalese district of Sindhuli for a week. Besides teaching a few classes, in order to facilitate sustainable improvements in the quality of education in these schools, we will hold workshops with teachers where ideas and materials for teaching will be shared.
In addition, last year, CHOICE donated computers, projectors, and water filters among other items to these schools, making a sizeable difference on the hygiene and quality of education of students. This year, we would like to donate HK$58,599 (equivalent to £5975) to REED for the provision of continued support to these schools after our departure. A detailed breakdown of how the money will be used can be found here.
Although we hold fundraising events, CHOICE depends on sponsorship heavily to run and to support the schools we serve. Thus, we humbly ask that you join us in making a difference for the education of children in Sindhuli through your financial support. With your help, we will be able to continue offering learning opportunities and financial support to our service partners, to support students on service trips, and more importantly, to bring considerable impact to our target communities.
On behalf of this year’s CHOICE committee, I thank you for your consideration and support. I hope you will take part in our commitment to promote universal education and global development.
