Supporting Act is a public installation by artists Baha Görkem Yalim and Petter Yxell, commissioned by ANGL Collective and selected by Edinburgh Art Festival as part of their official program for the 2016 edition, beginning at the end of July 2016. The installation will take place in a green area of the panoramic port of Leith, overlooking the seaside and creating suggestive perspectives on the view. The lawn is located just outside DOK Artist Space, an emerging artist-run organisation, and is equipped with picnic tables and benches. We are aiming at creating a pleasant public area for local residents and tourists alike to enjoy. The installation will be completely free and accessible.
‘Supporting Act’ engages with the position of being a sideshow: a structure which supports a bigger event, playing the role of a hidden foundation. It expresses the shared interest of the participating artists in creating a stage for unexpected things to happen. Yxell’s structures form the frame of the installation, creating a game of perspectives that visitors can explore by walking within them. Yalim will add elements to this setting, such as plant sculptures and a sound piece that will be presented in an empty shipping container.
Thanks to the kind support of Goldsmiths Annual Fund, Mondriaan Fund and Hope Scott Trust, we are very close to reaching our final funding target.
Your contribution will enable us to make this exciting project happen! You will be supporting the creation of a new public sculpture and sound installation realised by emerging artists and curators, as we will use the funds raised to purchase the materials that the artists need to realise this new artwork.
Thank you!
