What We Want to Do

Ripon Together wants to raise money to put even more Christmas Lights up in Ripon city centre next year to add to the festive atmosphere. But we need your help!

Over the past few years many of the older, life-expired Christmas Lights in the City have been replaced and new lights added to expand coverage . We want to continue doing this, and put even more lights up around the city each year.

Funding is available from a Harrogate Borough Council grant, this means that for every £1 we can raise in Ripon we will be able to attract another £1 - up to a maximum of £3,250. So, for each £1 you donate we will have £2 to spend, and if we can reach our target we will have a total of £6,500 to spend.

Any money raised will be used to buy additional lights early in 2018, (when demand is lower and better deals can be obtained), so that they can be installed next Christmas.

The costs of installing the lights, taking them down, storing them and testing them in preparation for the following Christmas is quite substantial, but this work is currently funded by Ripon City Council and money from Harrogate Borough Council. This means all of the money we raise will be used to purchase more lights.

Of course, it would be great to have lots of Christmas Lights everywhere across the city centre but there are minimum requirements about the height of the displays that we have to comply with, and of course we have to obtain building owner permission. The nature of some of the buildings and lamppost columns in Ripon can make some locations challenging, but where possible we will be seeking to use the money to put extra lights at:

  • Kirkgate / Duck Hill
  • High Skellgate
  • Westgate
  • Fishergate / Old Market Place / Queen Street
  • North Street
  • Finkle Street / Allhallowgate

We'd also welcome your thoughts about other locations where we should look to put additional lights.

A detailed proposal will be developed early in the new year.

Every £1 helps as it means we also get £1 from Harrogate Borough Council, so for any donation you make you'll have the thanks of the people of Ripon for helping to make our City Centre feel even more festive for Christmas 2018. Anyone donating to this project will have the opportunity to discuss in early 2018 how the money should be spent on the new Christmas Lights.

Pledge £50 and £100 is spent on new Lights

Donating £50 is a really great help as it means that we've got £100 to spend on new Christmas Lights. Anyone donating to this project will have the opportunity to discuss in early 2018 how the money should be spent on the new Christmas Lights.
