This fund has been set up to support XR Bedford Rebels with costs arising from the legal process and to support their work to prevent further damage to the climate.
In September 2020, six rebels were arrested (nearly half the group), whilst peacefully protesting in London against the Government’s continued support for road building, expansion of airports and the opening of a new coal mine in Cumbria: all of which further damages the climate and none of which supports their claim for a ‘green revolution’.
Since October 2018 rebels have been taking part in acts of civil disobedience with over 3,000 being arrested in the name of Extinction Rebellion. Bedford rebels have been an active part in this and are now going through the court system.
Mounting defence fees can be a daunting prospect for individuals to face and the costs are likely to have a substantial impact for many rebels. The money donated to this fund will help ease that burden and empower Rebels when making their decision to take their case to trial by easing the personal cost of doing so. If found guilty, then they face the added burden of a criminal record for doing nothing more than drawing attention to the climate emergency that is affecting us all.
Non-Violent Direct Action does work and has resulted in changes such as the divestment from oil and gas of multiple UK organisations including colleges and universities and the declaration of a climate emergency by the UK Parliament. Our movement is growing, and the Climate & Ecological Emergency is now filtering into the mainstream, but the UK Government is still failing to act adequately. We have a way to go!
Not everybody is able to take part in protests for various reasons, but we would ask you to please donate anything you can, and share this page widely with your friends, family and on social media. If not now, then when?
With love and solidarity,
Extinction Rebellion Bedford
