Can you crowdfund more than once?
Absolutely! We caught up with Matthew Thomson from Cornwall Food Foundation about their second successful crowdfunding campaign for Foodworks - an engaging, positive food-skills programme that gets into communities to improve people’s health and wellbeing. This time they got support from the Crowd and Santander's Changemaker fund.
Q: Why did you decide to Crowdfund?
A: Our first Crowdfund was a really powerful way of engaging supporters for our project -both inside our own organisation and out in the community. We wanted to give our crowd the chance to help us grow the project to the next stage.
Q: How is crowdfunding different from how you normally finance or fundraise for projects?
A: Crowdfunding forces you to explain your project to people to get their support. Everytime you explain it to someone the core idea of the project gets a bit stronger - and when someone you've talked to about the project funds the project it reinforces the strength of the project far more than money alone would ever do. It's about finding support from your crowds, old and new.
Q: What will you use the money for and what has happened since you hit your crowdfunding target?
A: Our Crowdfund has given us the match funding we need for the first year of a £1M grant from the European Social Fund to work with foodbanks and community gardens across Cornwall to scale up our FoodWorks project. Since we hit the target we've been thanking and working with our supporters to get the rewards despatched.. we have also started to work with our community partners to deliver FoodWorks in Penzance and Helston and to plan more FoodWorks in other places.
Q: What would be your top tips for others considering crowdfunding?
A: Grow your own crowd! Start with a storyboard about your project that your friendscan share with their friends and get everyone prepared for your Crowdfund. Be sure about the inspirational rewards you plan to offer - and work out what they will cost you! And stick to your comms plan giving project updates to your crowd even if you don't seem to be meeting your targets.
Q: You received a £20,000 Changemaker pledge from Crowdfunder's funding partner Santander. How did you find the grant application process via Crowdfunder?
A: Really straightforward - such a great help!! Thankyou Thankyou Crowdfunder and Santander.
