STRIKE FOR EUROPE ON 2 SEPTEMBER - IN SUPPORT OF THE 2ND REFERENDUM DEBATE ON 5 SEP.
STRIKE? -SOUNDS OUTRAGEOUS - WHY?
The AIM of this campaign is to show that the quiet half of the nation can't be ignored, and to ensure that Parliament, not the PM, has the final say on the UK's membership of the EU and Article 50.
Theresa May might wish she could Exit from the nightmare of Brexit , but be worried about the reaction of half the country if Brexit were abandoned. Our job is to make her think about the reaction of half the country if Brexit went ahead.
WE MAY BE THE QUIET HALF BUT WE ARE NOT LAMBS
The debate by MP's on the '4 Million signature' Petition on 5 Sep is a start, but not the end. The Petition will not be accepted, no chance, but the debate will likely range far beyond the Petition subject itself and be a 'practice run' for a full Commons debate on the results of the vote. For that reason it is an important moment.
Marches get media attention for one day. Strikes and boycotts get more. Repeated strikes even more. We are calling for a Strike for Europe Day on Sep 2nd, and then on the first Friday of every month. This will be until Theresa May passes the EU issue to Parliament to fully debate it, AND MP's take a free and final vote on EU membership, according to their statutory duties, which are: Firstly to act in the best interests of the nation, Secondly that of their constituents, Third and last: to their party. They take an oath to do so.
THIS IS THE PLAN: BOYCOTT BUSINESS AND COMMERCE IN THE UK FOR THE DAY.
It's not really a "Strike". That is to help get media attention. We are just calling people to:
DONT BUY, DON’T SPEND apart from any minor essential to get through the day.
DONT WORK: if you work for yourself, no problem: If you are employed, take the day off work, with your employer's permission, lose a day' s pay or a holiday day . Tell your employer why, he/she might agree!
WHAT TO DO ON THE DAY? Time is too short to (officially!) organise any march or demonstration but this is our SUGGESTION: Gather at 12 noon in your town or city. Dress code - EU Blue and Yellow! Check our facebook page 2-3 days before for nearest meetup places.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTERWARDS . Who knows? People will decide! Make it a 70’s Happy Happening? Dance, play music, hand out flowers and cookies, say bonjour, wie geht’s, ciao!, buenos dias, dobra dan, and hug strangers…. spread happiness and say F-it to Brexit!
BUT - It needs organisation to get going. Funds are needed now for publicity material, for spreading the word. Our target is £5,000. Whatever is received, will be spent on publicity. Any money left over will be donated to HelpRefugees. My name is Richard Bird, I am a retired professional, and I will vouch for safekeeping and accountability of all funds.
