OUR THEATRE STORY
One rubbish town. Two funny women. Ten daft characters. Lots of laughs.....
"Strife In A Northern Town" by Jennifer Banks premiered at the Women in Comedy Festival in 2017, with the amazingly talented Jennifer Banks (from "Coronation Street") and Tracy Gabbitas playing all ten characters, and directed by Rhonwen McCormack. It was shortlisted for "Best Show 2017" at the national Funny Women Awards, and described as "A festival highlight" by Jonathan Ross on the BBC Radio 2 Arts Show.
Now Capricious Rose Productions (Jennifer Banks' theatre company) and Blue Masque Theatre (Rhonwen McCormack's theatre company) are co-producing a short summer tour in 2018, and we need your help! We are unfunded, and have running costs. But doing this short tour will give the foundation to do a larger tour around the country in 2019-20, reaching more places and more people.
We are bringing the show to: London (May 13 - Drayton Arms Theatre) , Leeds (May 18 - Fenton Leeds as part of the Discount Comedy Festival), Bradford (June 9 and 16 - Bradford Playhouse), Manchester (June 28 - 53Two Theatre), the Buxton Fringe Festival (July 10, 11, 19, 22 - the Old Clubhouse), and hopefully Liverpool (to be confirmed).
WORKING CLASS (AND FEMALE) ARTISTS
Jennifer Banks is passionate about working class artists like herself and Tracy participating in theatre. The script passes the Bechdel Test multiple times over, was shortlisted for a Channel 4 development programme, and was described as "Snappy, engaging, irresistable - plenty to enjoy" by Cup of Beans Comedy. But underneath the humour is some very pointed commentary about Northern towns that are being left behind.
"When a rubbish Northern town starts to get even more rubbish, things go wrong for everyone. Come and meet our ten characters - including romance-mad shelf-stackers, "frenemy" receptionists, cheese-loving dog trainers, ranty old women, and the hostess of "Sapphic Jam" speed-dating - in a hilarious, fast-paced tale of love, death, betrayal, friendship, family and re-used mouthwash - and a city that needs to be saved. Can this lot do it?"
Support our crowdfunder, so that audiences can find out. It's really appreciated. Thank you, from everyone at "Strife In A Northern Town" for helping to make this happen!
