You may have seen StopSO UK on BBC Breakfast on Friday 5th October where Juliet Grayson, Co-founder and Chair of StopSO UK said that StopSO remains unfunded and will be crowdfunding to raise funds for victims and survivors to receive subsidised cost therapy.
StopSO UK is expanding its service to offer 1-2-1 therapy to victims and survivors of sexual abuse. We are fundraising to subsidise the cost of therapy for victims and survivors who are unable to afford fees for therapy. StopSO is a registered charity in England and Wales no 1170470.
The aim of the 'StopSO UK Survivors' project is to provide a fast referral to a StopSO therapist with therapy delivered in the community to victims & survivors of sexual abuse, enabling healing and for individuals to live fulfilling lives.
StopSO began in 2012 with a core aim to help anyone who feels at risk of causing sexual harm before they commit an offence. Since inception StopSO has helped over 2500 people, 50% of which were in 2017. As StopSO already has a therapist network across 90% of the UK, we are positioned to provide a UK-wide service to victims and survivors.
The physical and emotional consequences of sexual abuse for the victim and their family are devastating, with effects lasting through adulthood. Long term effects include emotional difficulties, mental health problems, problems with drugs and alcohol, disturbing thoughts, learning difficulties and behavioural problems to name a few.
Anyone can ask StopSO for help by self referring by telephone 07473 299883 or online www.stopso.org.uk. Typically, it takes 3-5 days to be in contact with a StopSO therapist and for an initial therapy session to be booked. Our referral process is fast so that victims and survivors are able to get the help that they need when they feel ready.
Based on Government figures 1,417 children fall victim to sexual abuse every day in the UK. In February 2017, StopSO planted a host of toy windmills on the bank of the Thames. Each windmill representing one child that will be sexually abused each day, in the UK.
StopSO is unfunded by government and currently clients pay for therapy themselves. StopSO is fundraising to be able to provide free or subsidised therapy. All funds raised through the Aviva Community Fund and StopSO UK Survivors Crowdfunding Campaign will go to subsidising the cost of therapy for victims and survivors of sexual abuse.
At our 1st Annual Conference 'Sexual Abuse in the 21st Century' in May 2017, survivors bravely shared their experiences with the conference.
"The horror of my sexual abuse when I was 8, is still with me sixty years later"
Please vote for this project to ensure that victims & survivors of sexual abuse, who are unable to afford fees, have access to therapy.
