As men get older they can often find themselves lonely and isolated. Some men live on their own after the loss of their lifelong partner, some may live with a partner or family member who requires caring for, some may just have lost their sense of purpose in life after retiring from work and are in need of a new direction and are looking to get involved with something unique.
Having a shed where men can visit regularly to meet new people and make new friends for a friendly discussion, brew & and a biscuit, to build something useful or to do a small repair to a family heirloom can make a huge positive difference to a man’s life, but also to his mental & physical health.
Blyth offers beautiful views of over the North Sea but if you feel that your locked indoors or your duty-bound to always stay at home to look after a family member, it’s easy to find yourself stuck in a rut that you can find difficult to get out of, missing even the simplest of things in life. Giving someone a new prospect in life, a new purpose and something to look forward to makes all the difference.
By the end of 2019, we aim to be working together as a group of men in the Blyth Man Shed welcoming new members, starting new projects and helping men achieve new things and being happier for it.
We envisage the shed offering a range of elements including offering a well-equipped workshop for carrying out woodwork & metalwork crafts including a special projects area. In addition, those green-fingered can enjoy a raised garden out in the sheds yard which a great little suntrap in the summer.
Up until this point all planning, researching ideas and the Men’s Shed Association application process has been heavily supported by project managers using other own resources. As the project progresses we discovered that kicking starting of the man shed incorporation will allow us the project managers to apply for funding and grants sooner rather than later which ultimately means that shed members can start enjoying the facilities quicker.
The overall mission of the Blyth Man Shed is to provide a shed where men can build friendships, share skills and knowledge, and of course, enjoy a lot of laughter and wellbeing.
The UK has 509 Men’s Sheds open with around 140 in development including Blyth Man Shed. We want to be the 510th shed to open it’s doors to the men of the community to reduce loneliness and isolation in Blyth and the neighbouring towns & villages.
