In November 2019 we were offered the opportunity to take over an empty shop space in the Hill Street Centre in Middlesbrough to showcase our Real Tees Valley films that we had supported twenty-five young people.
As a small charity, we wouldn't have been able to take up this opportunity without the support of our volunteers and we were supported by two young people on placement from the Prince's Trust to design and recruit new volunteers from a range of diverse backgrounds.
During the week we recruited four new volunteers, who along with our existing volunteers, helped us to me with 946 people and have 305 conversations. Two have continued to volunteer with us weekly and our filmmaker has gone on to a paid internship.
This pilot demonstrated to us that we could directly engage with both communities and volunteers in a different way and gave us the confidence to submit a bid to run the Palace Hub Gallery in Redcar, which we found out in January we had won.
Your support will enable us to support three volunteers over a three-month programme of activity including giving them direct experience of engaging with the public whilst staffing the gallery space and documenting the stories they hear and their own stories on our website.
This will help them to build their confidence in working as part of our team, engaging with members of the public, and they will be trained to document these experiences online using WordPress, giving them valuable skills that will help make them more employable.
