St Mary’s Church and Tower Café, Brecon

Many visitors ask us about the history of our church.  St. Mary’s Church has been at the heart of Brecon town centre since it was built as a Chapel-of-Ease for Brecon Cathedral, the then Priory of Brecon, in the 11th century.  Significant expansion was carried out, mainly during the reign of Queen Victoria.  To keep the Church open on a regular basis the Tower Café was created in 2010 in the spirit of St. Benedict, offering a warm, spacious, peaceful meeting place for local people and for visitors to the town.  The Church is key to the vibrant parish of St Mary’s with a very busy café in the heart of the community. It provides for the needs of many people of all ages for worship or relaxation.

Following recent surveys of the Church, the Architects found that the Church roof is in a dangerous condition and priority must be given to its urgent repair. Whilst grants have been applied for, an appeal has been set up to raise £50,000 over the next nine months. Over this period there will be a number of fund raising events and we hope that many will be able to join us at some of these events, particularly at one of our concerts.

As part of the appeal a sponsored swim is being undertaken by a team of three (a total age of over 200 years) on behalf of the Tower Café volunteers and the many charities that use our exhibition space.  The swim is being carried out during April and May with the aim of swimming the equivalent of the channel – Dover to Calais = 22 miles which is 1408 lengths of Brecon Swimming Pool.  We are trying to raise £2 a length of the pool so if you feel that this is an effort worth supporting then you can sponsor us by making a pledge on by clicking the pledge button.
