St Johns ABC - Extra Space for the community!
Location: Northern Ireland, UK
Our vision in St Johns Boxing Club is to provide a quality Amateur Boxing Club that caters for the needs of all its members so that they can achieve their potential. Being a member or volunteer of our club has physical, mental and socially positive benefits. Regular activities include a weekly youth club for Juniors, varying types of boxing, circuit and Pilates sessions. Sporting activities are limited in the area for young and old people thus our boxing club tailor courses and sessions depending on the age and fitness level of those taking part.
St John's ABC has been operating successfully in the rural village of Swatragh since the end of August 2010. Our coaches work with young people from age 8 through to adult, at the age of 11 and with an appropriate medical certificate these young boys/girls are then allowed to enter boxing competitions. Coaches’ work with these youngsters, developing their skills and confidence. All our coaches are volunteers, giving their time and dedication into St Johns ABC and the results to date are amazing. The success that we have achieved in St Johns in the 8 years since opening is a testament to our current coaches, we have boxers winning Ulster medals, All Ireland medals and boxers chosen to represent the County Derry Boxing Team, the Ulster Boxing Team as well one of our boxers securing his place to represent Ireland at the European Schoolboy Championships.
Boxing is a fantastic sport which helps participants to increase their confidence, develop their planning and problem solving skills and build upon their personal resilience and determination. The physical aspect of boxing is hugely important but it is also very much a mental game and in today’s society there is a need to look after our mental mind alongside our physical health. St Johns Boxing Club has become a significant part of the local community. Over the past 8 years we have integrated with the local residents and community and are well supported at fundraisers and events. We recognise the need in our community to run projects with children and young people in order to promote cohesion and inclusion as these young people are our future and if we can shape their attitudes correctly today we are ultimately benefiting the next generation as they learn that we all can and should live together peacefully and respectfully.
We recently secured funding from The Big Lottery fund to create an extra space on the boxing club site. The purpose of this extra space being to allow us to provide a better service for the community as having more space will allow us to offer classes and open our premises up for other use by the local community. We plan that with this extra space we will be able to become a dual functioning premises, for example boxing sessions and Pilates could run simultaneously.
We have with the lottery funding cleared an area at the rear of our building, laid a sub-floor and purchased a pre-fabricated building which gives us an extra 65m2 of space doubling our existing space. Now with this new area created we are in need of further funds - we plan to move the existing kitchen area out of the main boxing hall into the new building. We would also like to make a covered entrance/exit between the two buildings as well as tidy the grounds outside to facilitate car parking as we are presently relying on the goodwill of local residents to allow parking outside their homes. Further funding will allow us to bring the current project nearer to conclusion.
St Johns Boxing Club is growing every year - we have achieved fantastic success inside and outside the ring!
All our coaches are volunteers giving their commitment and time to the sport of Amateur boxing. We want to continue to grow and provide for our local community for many years to come!
