The village of St. Germans does not have a communal green space. The recreation ground site was left abandoned 20 years ago when it ceased to be used by the school. In 2014 a group of volunteers from the village started to cut back growth to rediscover the old football pitch. With help from a local farmer and support from the Parish Council and other local funders the football pitch was restored, fenced and reseeded. The grass is cut by a local volunteer.
Following consultations with the community in 2016, we moved on to restore a small adjoining area of woodland to create paths, picnic tables, an outdoor table tennis table and a unique wooden shelter.
The last part of our project that will see our work completed is to ensure the site has a long term future. We plan to collaborate with the Green Gym project to encourage our community to maintain their involvement and keep active through helping at the site; we want to ensure our site is secure and we want to ensure that it is biodiverse through creating areas of wildflower and insect logs.
