What are we trying to achieve?
As a small 'not-for-profit' organisation, that relies on interaction with our players and income for our sessions, the outbreak of Covid-19 has had a real cultural and financial impact on SSA. Therefore, we want to use the money raised through Crowdfunder to help our players to get back on the field as quickly as possible, via the Rediscover Football Camps. It is also crucial that we help the coaches. They are self-employed and as soon as the virus hit, and all sessions were cancelled, they lost their main source of income.
Who are we?
The Soccer Scholar Academy (SSA) vision is to build an evolving pathway of Football related opportunities that inspires and supports players, coaches, academics and professionals to do something they love in the sport that they love.
In Portsmouth, we provide football coaching and competitive teams to over 250 players each week with players aged 2-18 years of age.
How we help young coaches:
We work closely with Portsmouth College to educate sports students and provide them with a pathway that leads to paid coaching opportunities, in addition to gaining a range of football coaching qualifications. This allows students to explore coaching, amongst other industry specific roles, as a career destination. We currently work with 20 talented coaches, all aged between 16-22 years old.
The services we offer:
Our 'performance pathway' provides children from all over Portsmouth, and beyond, access to expert coaching and the opportunity to build from their first steps into the game right through to academy level.
We have Fun and Futures technical sessions, Tots and Wildcats that provide a pay and play starting point for any player at any level, from which they can then transition into a team environment through our travel team programme.
To support players to develop to the level they desire we offer specialist 1-2-1 sessions and development centres. These can provide a platform for progression into professional football academies, where clubs deem appropriate.
We believe in citizenship through developing people, players, coaches, academics and professionals. This is demonstrated through our SSA values that underpin all of our programmes, they are: Courage, Creativity, Inclusivity, Respect and Resilience.
Why are we fundraising for the Rediscover Football Camps?
The 'Rediscover Football Camp' format will bring players, from a range of socio-economic backgrounds, back together with their friends in a safe, stimulating environment, playing the sport they love.
We will also use the funding to offer our coaches more paid coaching opportunities as soon as restrictions are lifted. We will also invest in additional coaching and professional qualifications, as well as helping them to find a career in coaching or sport.
Finally, the money will support SSA to sustain the programme and enable us to continue our provision once the pandemic has cleared, allowing us maintain the essential service we offer to our players, coaches and the local community.
