My name is Heather Shaw and I am in my final year of study at Lancaster University for a psychology degree. I have been successful in securing an 8 week placement working with mentally vulnerable communities in Sri Lanka, a small island off the Southern coast of India. This island was one of the places hit worst by the Boxing Day tsunami in 2004, where the death toll reached over 230,000 - not only this, but those who survived lost the majority of their loved ones, possessions, their homes and their livelihoods, which has had a terrible impact on their mental well-being. The non-profit organisation SLV (Sri Lanka Volunteering) is therefore desperate for volunteers with a psychology background to go out and help with the daily treatment and recovery of the community. Any money raised by this crowdfunding page will be used to help with the costs of accomodation, volunteer training and materials used in therapeutic activities organised for patients.
