Unfortunately this project was not successful.

To beat mental illness and generate an income from sports photography.

by Nick Browning in Balsall Common, England, United Kingdom

Until 2014, I worked at a senior level within the optical market.  My roles covered retail, manufacturing/supply and creation of sales development programmes.

Unfortunately, redundancy started a spiral of crippling depression that has prevented me returning to an employed role.  Simply staying alive has been a struggle.  I attempted to, in a self-employed capacity, work as a consultant but realised that my clients could see that I wasn't operating at the level I had once been known for.

Having always enjoyed photography, I turned to the 'art of light' as a means of finding a creative outlet in early 2017.  Photography has, quite simply, been a life saver.  I spent countless hours learning different photographic and editing techniques and gradually developed my own style of portraiture.  My portfolio can be seen at www.nickbimages.com.  The collage in this Crowdfunder profile is an image I created for my son's birthday.

To date, almost of all of my work has been portfolio-building, rather than commercial.  Partially, this is because my self-esteem has evaporated over the 5 years and marketing myself is challenging.

However, I am regularly asked to photograph sporting events (mainly rugby, cricket and football) but do not possess the equipment required to 'shoot' sports.

Sports photography would not only help me stave off the demons of mental ill-health, but also create a viable income stream.

Sports photography equipment is incredibly expensive.  I have 2 lenses that would form part of my kit list, but need the following to start my sports photography business:

2 x Canon 1DX mk2 camera bodies (£3,500 each = £7,000 total)

1 x Canon 400mm, f/2.8 lens (mk3) £12,000

1 x 15" MacBook Pro laptop (£3,200)

Waterproof & thermal clothing (£300)

Total:  £22,500

Any help in taking this life-changing step would be fantastic!
