Welcome to Spiedie Shack
Spiedie Shack is a new street food venture being launched by Jaime & Robert, which builds on our experience of establishing and operating The yellow house, our award-winning bar & restaurant in South East London.
We had a great trial run at the weekend with many stopping by to say hello and to sample spiedies, fresh waffles and Jaime's frozen custard - and giving us great feedback!
What's the idea?
We'll be serving spiedies, pastries, cookies, Jaime's frozen custard and a selection of hot & cold drinks from a converted yellow shipping container located outside our local shopping centre in Surrey Quays.
Our plan is to serve the same quality food during the daytime as we serve in our restaurant in the evenings. The chefs will use our restaurant kitchens to prepare and marinate the meats and bake bread daily for the spiedies. Jaime will also make pastries, cakes, cookies and fresh frozen custards in his bakery for delivery to Spiedie Shack.
What are spiedies?
Spiedies are delicious hot meat sandwiches introduced and popularised by Italian immigrants to the USA during the 1920’s. They are based on spiedini, a regional dish of Abruzzo in Italy, and are traditionally made with chunks of lean meat, usually chicken, pork and lamb, which have been marinated, are grilled on metal skewers over charcoal and served in Italian bread with Italian dressing.
What's on the menu?
We'll be serving our selection of grilled spiedies, including vegetarian and vegan options, in Jaime's ciabatta rolls baked daily or in a fresh waffle or salad box with a choice of dressings. And as we go to the meat and fish markets every week for the restaurant we probably won't be able to resist offering regularly changing specials at Spiedie Shack!
We'll also be offering charcoal grilled steak sandwiches and steak & chips with a choice of horseradish cream, caramelised onions and our delicious bone marrow gravy. The sandwich steaks will be dry-aged sirloin supplied by Donald Russell, a leading Scottish butcher who supply all our steaks for The yellow house.
Jaime will be making his frozen custards and waffle cones and baking pastries, cookies and cakes daily - great as a treat and with a tea or coffee watching the world go by.
We would love our friends, customers and local community to join us on our journey by participating in the launch of the original Spiedie Shack in London SE16.
We acquired the "Capish?" converted shipping container a while ago and have been preparing it for Spiedie Shack, which is located outside the entrance to Surrey Quays Shopping Centre. We now wish to raise additional funds to help us with the imminent and long-awaited opening.
This is a rewards based crowdfunding project and we have created a list of pledges with rewards to tempt you!
Most of the rewards will be as a voucher we'll email to you if our crowdfunding project meets or exceeds the target. These vouchers will be redeemable either at Spiedie Shack or The yellow house as specified for each reward. If you wish, you can make a donation without a reward, just a big thank you from us!
If we raise our target of £6,000 in four weeks we can pay for the equipment we need including the new till, some of the kitchen equipment and a larger Konro charcoal grill, a new ice cream freezer for Jaime's frozen custards, for the outdoor trestle tables and benches and also for additional start-up costs including packaging and marketing materials.
We may introduce stretch targets if our crowdfunding target is met so that we can for example install a large awning, which would transform the outdoor seating area in front of Spiedie Shack.
