To create a specially designed room which combines a range of stimuli to help individuals with special needs, develop and engage their senses

by Limitless SEND in Blackburn, England, United Kingdom

Limitless is a company created by two former county council workers to make a difference to the lives of children and young adults with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.

From personal experience of over 20 years combined, children with special needs and learning difficulties are extremely limited in their activities and parents offer struggle with the challenging demands of caring for a child.

The original concept of Limitless was to provide respite care via the form of residentials, which are supported by various SEN schools across the North West aswel as by key social and case workers within Lancashire County Council and Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council, both of which pass children through to the service where needed.

The expansion of services now sees us taking home in a former nursery centre located within a Sports Centre in Blackburn, of whom we have a very close partnership with and a 20 year lease. We are looking to use this centre as our new home of provisions alongside our respite care.

The development of a new sensory space in the room for both children and adults with SEND but also mother and baby groups, who also benefit massively from these rooms. From this our branch out will see us run inclusive and adapted sports sessions to get SEN children active and also arts&crafts sessions.

This funding is solely for the construction of our multi sensory room.

Here are some of the benefits of the environment we are looking to create:

  • Increase concentration and focus attention.
  • Develop or reactivate senses of hearing, sight, smell, touch, and taste.
  • Heighten awareness and improve alertness.
  • Improve coordination and motor development.
  • Promote cognitive development by increased brain function.
  • Lead participants to explore their environment.
  • Provide security.

Sensory equipment can help develop key life skills including vocalization, gross motor skills, color recognition and tracking.

The project has backing from local councillors and the office of the Blackburn MP along with various other community groups such as schools, mosques, care organisations.
