ROWING SOLO 3,000 MILES ACROSS THE ATLANTIC

HELP SUPPORT THE GROUND-BREAKING RESEARCH, AND AWARD WINNING CARE & SUPPORT OF THE MS SOCIETY.

THE MISSION

My name is Gareth Reynolds, and in December 2019 I will be rowing in the solo category of the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge as team 'Atlantic Dragon'.

I will be rowing 3,000 miles across the Atlantic ocean, unsupported, in order to raise money for the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society, and help to raise awareness on issues surrounding mental health.

To put this into perspective, more people have scaled Everest or travelled into Space than have rowed across the Atlantic. Even fewer have done it solo.

My purpose is to raise £100,000 for the MS Society, helping to fund the ground-breaking research, and award winning care & support that they provide. MS is one of the most common causes of disability in young adults, it can affect people in many different ways, at any time, and there is currently no cure. The work of the MS Society is invaluable to those suffering with MS and their families, helping them to live and cope with the condition on a day-to-day basis.

I would also like to use the campaign as a platform to talk about mental health, to raise awareness, sharing my own experiences and encouraging people to talk about their mental health.

THE RACE - WHAT LIES AHEAD

As part of the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge, I'll be one of thirty five boats attempting to cross the Atlantic in December 2019. In my 24ft boat, I'll be travelling 3000 miles under man power alone.

Here's just some of the challenges I'll face...

SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND EXHAUSTION: Rowing for up to 20 hours a day, through day and night, catching minimal sleep between shifts.

ISOLATION: There’s no outside help. I take everything I need on board the boat for the full crossing.
In an emergency situation, a rescue can be days away.

EXTREME WEATHER CONDITIONS:  I will experience 30-40ft waves, storms and an extreme range of temperatures.

VULNERABILITY: Whales and sharks, and rowing through shipping lanes for vessels 30x the size of my rowing boat.

HEALTH ISSUES: Salt sores, blisters, infections, muscle damage and depletion and sunstoke are just a few of things I will suffer from.

NUTRITION: All food is freeze dried and my water is pumped from the sea. Keeping nutrition levels high and my body fully hydrated will be a challenge in itself.

THE BOAT AND EQUIPMENT: Any boat damage is dealt with by me - at sea - in the aforementioned 30-40ft waves!

WHY AM I RAISING MONEY?

The specialist boat, on-board equipment, on-shore support and insurance all cost money and without these, the challenge isn't possible.
The good news is that a lot of the costs incurred on the boat and equipment will be recouped upon re-sale, and all proceeds will go to the MS Society. I hope to achieve the £100,000 target set, in order to make a real difference in helping those affected by MS.

Whilst training has been well underway for many months, and I am entered into the race, I still need to be able to fund a boat to make this challenge a reality - this is where you come in!

Your generous donations will help to secure the all important ocean rowing boat needed to make this challenge possible.
