To bring together people from Romanian Community in UK for Social, Educational & Cultural activities and events.

by Sophia Cristina Lauric in Edgware, England, United Kingdom

New stretch target

Inspired by the social project of major organisations worldwide and working closely with people who have years and years of experience on board of charities as well as collaborating with organisations that provide help to people in need, we will be able to structure a program that will offer step by step follow up for all the grant’s time of implementing.

The Romanian Cultural Charitable Trust was born in 2018 as a response to the needs of people from our community in UK.

The Social Canteen will offer a free hot meal, support, advice and help to the Romanian community in need. Challenges faced are: English language skills, immigration concerns, accessing help, understanding systems such as work, education, health and finding a safe home with fair rent. The social canteen is a project opened and freely available to all people in need, all citizens irrespective of their age, race, sex, religion, political association, ethnic origin, or any other individual or group characteristic unrelated to ability, performance, and qualification.

We are targeting two groups who are experiencing particular difficulties. They are firstly single men. Many of which have come to Britain to find work but have found themselves in a situation where they exploited by employers, often homeless or living in over crowed conditions working long hours. They need access to information on employment rights, immigration, health services & education. Many have no access to food or relaxation, they are isolated and their quality of life is very poor.

The second group are families with children. One or both parents are working but earning below minimum wage. They are not able to pay their rent, in debt, are vulnerable to unscrupulous landlords &are struggling to make ends meet. They need support to budget, education, improved language skills, access to benefits, & health services.

SCP will deliver sessions with single men on Monday’s and families on Wednesday’s. We will provide a social club environment where people play board games, music and pool, watch TV and food is provided. SCP will provide volunteers who will work with advice workers to informally engage the different groups in conversation and ask them to complete our questionnaire.
