by smesu in Edinburgh

We did it
On 4th June 2016 we successfully raised £5,885 with 153 supporters in 56 days

Help us build a new school building in the Cambodian village of Banteay Kabalchin, where currently over 200 pupils share just 3 classrooms.

 New stretch target

We've been overwhelmed by everyone's support and we are delighted to have reached our £5000 target.  As we have a day or two left, we've decided to increase the target slightly.  Any additional funds raised will be invested in the renovation of the existing classrooms to help improve the learning environment for the kids.

Thanks again to everyone who has pledged a donation!

The Project...

This July, Explorer Scouts from SMESU Edinburgh, will be travelling to rural Cambodia to support the children of Banteay Kabalchin.  Whilst camping in the village, living alongside the local community and working with local craftsmen, they will build a new two-classroom school building for a school that currently suffers from chronic overcrowding.

The Explorer Scouts have been working hard for the past 18 months to prepare for the project, including undertaking training in woodwork and bricklaying. They have also been working incredibly hard to fundraise to support the project. They have learned about the terrible impact Pol Pot, and his Khmer Rouge regime, has had on Cambodia and how the impact is still felt today in one of the world's poorest countries.

In total, it will cost about £10,000 for the materials to build the new school building. Your donations will help this project be realised, and have a direct positive impact on the lives of the local children and community of Banteay Kabalchin and its surrounding district.

Living out a promise to help others...

By following their Scout Promise to 'help others' and by living out the Scouting values of integrity, respect, care, belief and cooperation, the SMESU Explorer Scouts aim to enable the young people and families of this community have a brighter future.

But they need your help to ensure the project is a success!

How your donation will help...

£5 will buy a sack of cement

£10 will buy 2 tonnes of sand

£25 will buy 500 bricks

Larger donations of £50, £100 or £250 will help pay for the steel pillars, roof trusses and wood cladding for the walls.

As a thank you for your support the unit will offer a range of 'thank you gifts' and keep you up to date with the progress of the project itself.
