To provide training resources for retail stores to provide a more compassionate, supportive service for those who find shopping a challenge

by Katherine in Newcastle Upon Tyne, England, United Kingdom

Slow Shopping provides a safe and inclusive time for people to do their shopping. It was inspired by my experience as my mother's carer. I used to take my mum, Jo, shopping but it became increasingly stressful as my mother's health deteriorated. It was a very isolating and humiliating experience and I felt that there must be a better way to support people who live with conditions that affect their lives and that of their families.

Slow Shopping advocates dedicated times in which people can shop and know that there are trained staff who are there to help; that adjustments have been made to the environment of the store such as chairs and a welcome table and that they will find extra services available to them.

I have been trialling slow Shopping for the past year and have been working with Sainsbury's, Marks and Spencer, Asda and more recently Tesco, to develop the service.

I now need to enable the project to be accessed by more people and more stores in the UK. I want to develop a set of training principles that can be easily accessed and a training video that can be downloaded from my website at
