This year, I am running the Stroud half marathon in aid of the Friends of Rush Skatepark crowdfunder. I am nowhere near fit enough (!!) but it is a great cause and I would be honoured if you could sponsor me.
I first went to Rush Skatepark a few years ago – it was half term and the place was packed. The atmosphere was electric and I experienced the famous Rush WOW factor for the first time. Children, young people and adults worked together to show off what looked to me like gravity defying skills on huge ramps.
The closure of the park has been widely felt across the Stroud District. I have received countless emails, letters and communications from devastated young people and parents. It was a place that provided more benefits than just sport and the Rush team are well loved locally.
A question about the Skatepark from a young boy at a local primary school recently made me realise we need to show children that we have not given up fighting for Rush.
The 'Friends' team have been fundraising for a future Skatepark, alongside extensive work to find a new site and making a charity application. Please follow them on facebook if you can.
I like running and run whenever I can but being an MP seven days a week and a mum on top does limit the time I have available. With only a few weeks training I am hoping that chasing after GiGi these days may help get me round 13 miles!
We are grateful for any sponsorship. It's for a really worthy cause in aid of something for young people in Stroud to use. The pandemic was difficult for all of us but we know it hit the young particularly hard. A new skatepark would be a big boost.
