We did it! Thank you to all who have donated to support Sing Along the RIver 2016. Our new target of £1000 will help us to add the sparkle to each of the evenings with enhanced lighting and recording of the event. We also hope that we may begin working towards our Christmas performances, involving local primary schools, and other community groups. The more money that we can raise, the brighter we can make Lostwithiel's Dickensian Evening and other seasonal events.
Sing Along the River began three years ago, the brainchild of Emma Mansfield, Director of Lost in Song, and a few members of her choir. Originally the events were an opportunity to showcase the talents of the choir in their hometown of Lostwithiel, Cornwall. In 2016 it is hosting five evening concerts with choirs and bands from all over Cornwall.
Sing Along the River concerts are free events where all can enjoy great live music in a beautifully lit park next to the River Fowey. Local food producers provide hot food and drinks while a licensed bar and cake stall offer something for everyone. Over the past two years audiences have grown and our own sound production was struggling to do its job by the end of last summer.
We are thrilled that Arts Council England have awarded a grant that will help us to pay some extraordinary musicians to perform this summer. We believe that all musicians should be paid appropriately for their performances and the grant means we can support other community choirs and bands as well as headline acts. If we can raise an extra £250 we will have enough to employ a professional sound engineer with equipment that will make our music heard every evening.
Not only will Lost in Song be performing in Lostwithiel on Thursday evenings in August, but we are also integral to welcoming The Man Engine to our town. This afternoon concert should provide sufficient sound to raise the 10m tall miner from its slumber and celebrate Cornish mining heritage.
All of these events are run by volunteers who give of their time to erect stages, stalls and tents as well as lighting, bunting and flags. Someone has to meet the man delivering the toilets whilst others concertedly litter pick and steward. Any money raised by the concerts is used to further support Lost in Song and allow for them to contribute to Cornwall's cultural and artistic events.
