We are a small independent day centre. We are not a national charity, just a small dedicated charity trying to care for older people, and specifically older people with dementia to give their unpaid carers a rest during the daytime.
We have been relentlessly chasing support to increase the standard of our day centre in relation to what we can offer our vulnerable clients to make the time they spend with us the best it can be.
We are trying to turn an unused room into our very own cinema room. A place our clients can go to feel like they are stepping back in time to see film from yesteryear.
The power film and music on someone with dementia is a sight to be seen. The smallest of things can trigger a memory of that period of their lives long thought forgotten. We want to be able to give our clients a safe and secure space to relax and enjoy a film and maybe recall an emotion or piece of their own rich history.
Dementia diagnosis attracts a stigma, having the disorder doesn't means you cannot enjoy life. Someone with dementia can sit back and enjoy a film, or music performance. Some of our service users are fairly advanced with their dementia and they would no longer be able to access normal cinema provisions in the community. So we want to be able to give them that special experience in a safe setting where trained staff can support them with their needs.
Our screenings will be dementia friendly screenings; These could be people living with dementia, autism, or other neurodiverse people. These screenings are identifiable by some adjustments such as altered lighting, volume of sound, arrangement of the venue, and usually don’t have trailers, and customers are encouraged to get up and move around, or speak or make noise if they want to/feel the need to.
Please help us create this wonderful space for people who have earnt the right to be entertained and enjoy their quality time in their older years.
