It is the late Victorian era. Young Eliza sneaks out to visit the travelling fair that has come to town. Her insatiable curiosity draws her into the closed freakshow tent on the edge of the fairground. Hoping to have caught sight of the freaks, she is disappointed to discover that it is all fakery. A sobbing sound coming from the depths of the marque reveals a strange man in a cage, pleading to be freed. However, when she tries to help him she gets drawn into his nightmare.
Even today people are still fascinated by the extravagance and eccentricity of the Victorians. Whether they wished to communicate with the death through séance sessions, or take pretty pictures with their deceased loved ones, the allure of the Victorians still mesmerises many of us.
Sideshow is a short film, which will want to feed our fascination with this era in a dark, eerie, and gothic way. This 10-minute short will offer an escape to the past, show the audience another bizarre obsession of the Victorians: freak shows, curiosity jars, exotic animals, fairgrounds. But all this with an obscure twist. As Elisa’s character comes to life, the viewers will be confronted with the dilemma between reality, imagination and deception.
As for the crew, we are a lovely crazy bunch of creatives from across the UK. We love telling stories and want to share our passion and ideas with as many people as possible, and we wish to achieve this through theatre and films. We believe that with hard work, perseverance, and patience we can make a break in the industry. The help we received from our colleagues and collaborators we aim to give back through our work and working ethos, thus creating and offering opportunities for emerging artists and creatives to get first-hand experience in this industry.
We love to work in environments where all of us can thrive, have fun and grow in our profession!
About Spellbound Shots UK
As a small independent film company, we here at Spellbound Shots UK are looking for every opportunity to expand and continue our work. We plan to work regionally, nationally, and most importantly, internationally. The film industry benefits massively from international collaborations – hence why we wish to carry on working in an inclusive, supporting and tolerant way. Sideshow will enable us to experiment with our artistic endeavours. It will also open a door to new possibilities to explore, research and develop our future projects. We wish to explore themes like: Transylvanian and Celtic folklore, drama, crime black comedy, and our list is endless. However, our main ambition is to someday create a feature-length movie.
So, after all this, how much do you really value your sanity?
P.S. You can help us achieve our ambitions. Become part of our journey!
