Shattered is a story of betrayal and revenge. It begins in 1942 with the Nazi occupation of Holland. Our main characters Ilse, her brother Helmut and his girlfriend, Erika, do not understand yet the devastating impact the new regime will have on their lives. However, the siblings are becoming alarmed with the restrictions placed on them as they are Jewish.
Eventually, in 1944, their hiding place is discovered and they are deported to Auschwitz. In the cattle car during their journey, Helmut dies and Ilse ponders on who could have informed the authorities of their whereabouts.
After the war in 1946, Ilse returns to Holland. Haunted by her brother's death and her horrific wartime experiences, Ilse plots revenge. She has returned to get vengeance on the one person who she believes informed on them. That person is her best friend, Erika.
We want to present the events of the story in a respectful, yet expressive manner. By researching and blending the cinematic tropes of film noir, contemporary war films and dutch cinema we hope to shoot a film with a unique look and striking images on screen, while also allowing the audience to feel the weight of the story and its effects on the characters.
Production Design plays a very important role in the creation of Shattered, it is important with this film that we recreate and reflect an accurate time period in order to make the story believable and to allow for the audience to truly understand and immerse themselves in the story. We aim to do this through the costumes, makeup, sets and locations. Costume will be particularly relevant, finding clothing that is of the era and accurate will help our actors excel as their characters. The recreation of the cattle car that would have been used to transport the Nazi prisoners to concentration camps will be a challenge, looking for the right materials and making the set convincing. What's more working closely with the cinematography department to master the balance of colour in a black and white film.
Sound Design plays a key part in terms of storytelling. It can tell a different story or even deliver a deeper feeling behind the content of the film. For Shattered, we aim to delve deep into the minds of our characters and reflect their internal struggles as well as bringing true the events that occurred during the Nazi Regime.
The foley design, music score and sound effects will all play a key part in delivering the right atmosphere for the film. As it is non-linear in many aspects the contrast between scenes are huge, which is why it is important to execute the sound design cleanly and with great depth. Achieving this we will be able to link scenes of intense violence to great themes such as finding 'peace' and forgiveness. The sound design of 'Saving Private Ryan' is a great inspiration as it reflects the realness of events and also connotes how the characters feel/are able to comprehend what is happening.
Although supplied with a small budget from The Northern Film School, that only goes so far to cover the very basics of the production. Although set in the Netherlands in the 1940's, it will be filmed in Yorkshire which means we will be replicating not only locations but also the time period. By supporting us, you enable us to make the production as authentic as possible and allow us to accurately portray events of the time in a respectful and emotional manner.
This is the crews last year at The Northern Film and our final chance to create something truly amazing that will leave audiences stunned. It is an accumulation of all our our skills and learning in the last three years of University in order to make a graduation film we can be proud of for years to come.
Your money will be spent on creating the world in which the story is told. Primarily the money will be used to pay for the locations in which we are filming in, however it will also go towards costume/set design and production costs. Your money will go towards all elements of the production paying for expenses such as cast, travel, location and vehicle hire costs.
