About Stopgap Dance Company and Sg Troop:

Sg Troop is a small Youth Dance Company of disabled and non-disabled dancers based in Farnham; established, developed and trained by Stopgap Dance Company.

Stopgap Dance Company nurtures distinctive disabled and non-disabled dancers to create outstanding work and is working hard to develop the next generation of inclusive dancers. Stopgap have been training world-class dancers for the last 20 years and our productions have toured nationally and internationally.

At Stopgap we have found the best way to learn about creating choreography is to dance and create in an inclusive environment. Sg Troop is made up of seven committed disabled and non-disabled dancers and each week the young dancers find new ways to reinvent dance steps.  The group is led by Stopgap’s Artistic Director, Lucy Bennett, and wheelchair dancer, Nadenh Poan. Nadenh shares ideas on translation and how to dance in a wheelchair, giving the young dancers a technique they can share with their peers and use in their choreography.

Troop have collectively devised a short work, ‘Book of Me’, under the guidance and support of Lucy and Nadenh, that has been performed to great acclaim locally in Surrey.

About the project you will be helping to fund:

Sg Troop are thrilled to have been selected to represent the South East at Youth Dance England’s national dance festival, U.Dance, with their short performance, ‘Book of Me’. U.Dance celebrates and showcases the very best in youth dance from around the country. Stopgap are therefore raising money for Sg Troop’s travel, support and participation in this exciting event in Plymouth.

U.Dance is an important opportunity for Troop’s young people to experience what the professional dance industry has to offer as well as to put all their hard work into practice and give a fantastic performance (which we we know they will!)

But the main reason we really want Sg Troop to go to U.Dance is to share with the rest of the industry that great inclusive choreography can be achieved with young dancers. Stopgap wants to prove that youth dance can be both comprehensive and supportive and that youth dance in the UK can only benefit from encouraging more young disabled dancers to participate in high quality youth dance.

Please watch the short video above to hear from the Troop dancers on why they would like your support to go to Plymouth and share their high quality inclusive youth dance.
