Both David and I grew up in Daventry, we have four children, two of whom have SEND(Special Educational Needs and Disabilities).
We have found as parents getting support and resources for our two children difficult to say the least and feel Daventry is limited with the support, resources and facilities it has for children with SEND this means for many parents having to travel further afield, which can be exhausting on its own.
Our son Stephen, has significant SEN and although in a mainstream school setting he has an extremely high level of support to be able achieve this. After last year’s birthday party attendance was so low we decided not to throw Stephen another party and wanted to look to do other things with him but we had great difficulty in finding anything local that would meet his needs.
We feel this needs to change, we will be fundraising and applying for grants to look to provide the SEND children of Daventry and surrounding areas with a Sensory Bus, the bus will tailored for children with SEND and will be able to travel to the children or be a place locally the children can come to.
Should the demand for these types of facilities be high we will then look to open up a sensory centre too. This sensory centre will look to stimulate their basic sensory needs while also allowing them the chance to socialise in a safe and relaxing environment with other children who share their needs, and give SEND parents the chance to meet and support each other.
We feel every child should have the same opportunity to play and learn, no matter what their ability.
