We are raising a budget for a short student film based on the Scottish mythical creature, the Selkie.

by Georgie Pritchard in Ayr, Scotland, United Kingdom

As legend goes, the mysterious Selkie women will come ashore, remove their seal skins and dance upon the beach. They are magical and mystical and any man might find himself enchanted by their beauty. And if a man were to sneak around the dancing Selkies and steal one of their skins, he would find himself with a beautiful and dutiful wife to see to his every wish. But the Selkie woman would be trapped, stolen away from her home in the sea and forced to marry a man she does not love, unable to leave without her seal skin.

"Selkie" follows Aila, one such Selkie woman who has been kept away from her home and family by a man who betrayed her. Torn between her marriage and young child who she loves more than anything, and her true home and self in the sea, she struggles to survive in a world she wasn't meant for.

The film will be a largely visual piece with little to no dialogue. It's something I have wanted to make for a long time and adapted my original idea into a short film script that remains true to the myth and Scottish heritage including shooting natural Scottish wildlife and landscapes.

We have excellent actors on board who are eager to work on the project and have a great understanding of the characters as well as a dedicated composer working on a score. Our team is practised at working together and extremely excited by the project. Aside from being part of our coursework we hope to enter it into film festivals across Britain and possibly abroad as well.

The budget we are looking for would go towards covering travel expenses for our cast and crew, food for shoot days, costumes, props and set design and festival entry fees.
