SELFA Girls Rock is an amazing project that uses performance and the arts to empower young girls, we harness the transformative power of music and performing with this group of girls aged 11-18 who live or go to school in North Yorkshire. Many of whom have a negative experience of education and are disadvantaged through their social and economic situation.
This project builds the girls self-esteem through music, creation & performance and gives them opportunities to have their voice heard in a supportive and nurturing environment. We have a team of mentors and fantastic role models that make a positive difference to improving the wellbeing of the girls by offering them a space to express themselves. The girls are supported to take the lead and are involved from the offset; by finding out what music they like and what instruments they would like to learn. They are encouraged to organise and manage their time, decide together what music they will play and plan what their band will look like.
The feedback we will get from the girls is a message of hope instead of despair and happiness instead of self-harming; they tell how the project has made a real, genuine difference to their lives. We firmly believe that music and arts play a powerful role in helping young girls to express and empower themselves and without any doubt this project is innovative in its healing benefits as well as unlocking genuine artistic talents.
We want to continue building the girls self-confidence, changing their self-perception and raising aspirations. The money raised through this crowdfunding will enable us to not only continue the group but also give the girls new opportunities such as attending music festivals, theatre performances and a residential weekend. Many of which, these girls have never experienced. We will need the support and involvement of community volunteers for this project. For the girls attending and the volunteers involved in the project there is an opportunity to improve life skills and life chances. We believe this project will benefit the wider community and create a long-lasting legacy.
