Improving individual and community well-being through dementia cafe and other support groups by employing a centre manager near Bristol

by SEDBURY SPACE in Sedbury, England, United Kingdom

New stretch target

Any additional funding we are fortunate to raise will be used to extend the term we are able to employ the Centre Manager thereby improving the sustainabilty of our community work.

Who we are: We are a group of local residents in Sedbury, an out of the way corner of Gloucestershire just over the Severn Bridge from Bristol. We came together in 2016 following a community consultation to develop a community space and use it to meet the needs of this marginalised community.

Crowdfunding aim:  We're raising money to recruit a part time Centre Manager for Sedbury Space to embed and sustain the good work achieved to date and to develop and increase capacity of what we can offer for the good of the whole community.

Vision: We want 'Sedbury Space' to  be an inclusive place of welcome and well-being, drawing more people together and encouraging them to get involved, volunteering and participating, thereby reducing social isolation and improving mental health as well as meeting specific needs and offering support.

So far:  Since re-opening in April 2018, following a great refurbishment project to make the venue really welcoming and accessible, we have launched a wonderful variety of activities, catering for a wide range of ages, needs and interests including:

  • a monthly Memory Café for people with dementia and their carers;
  • a weekly One Stop Café offering company, advice and support;
  • gentle exercise classes for those with limited mobility or long term health conditions;
  • a craft café and board games café, offering relaxed and fun sessions to build friendships;
  • a homework club for primary aged children with teenagers volunteering alongside for their Duke of Edinburgh award;
  • refreshments for a Walking for Health group;
  • a Shared Reading Group, encouraging people of all levels of literacy to read together.

Support: All activities are organised and supported by local volunteers, of which there are about fifty offering regular or occasional support. A recent survey of our visitors, of which there were 140 over a four week period, drew out loads of positive comments ranging from support given during family problems, lonely people making new friends, newcomers to the area finding a place to connect and valuable help and advice received both from agencies and from our volunteers. The feedback given highlights Sedbury Space as a peaceful, friendly, welcoming and calm refuge.

The charity has also built a positive reputation in the area gaining the trust of local schools, Parish and District Council and Police.  Barnwood Trust, one of the early major investors in refurbishing the space, has produced a short film of the Sedbury Space story. You can find the film clip here:

Need: As the activities of the charity have increased, the workload has inevitably grown and is beginning to push the limits of our volunteers’ time and commitment.  We need someone who can deal with the day to day management of the centre, provide a consistent and reliable administrative support, ensure effective communication, co-ordinate our team of volunteers, improve promotion and publicity and seek ways to reach out to and draw in others who will benefit from the services that Sedbury Space provides, to address the growing issues of isolation and loneliness.

Cost:  A three year project will cost around £36,000.

Funding: We have already been offered a generous grant of £10,000 from the Lottery Awards for All and have applied for grants from other funders. We want to raise at least £3,000 from crowdfunding to encourage a large number of smaller stakeholders and to demonstrate the wide local support. We would love to encourage Aviva employees to support this project too and help us reach our stretch target of £10,000.

Rewards: Everyone who makes a donation will have their names displayed on our Aviva Community Fund Supporters Certificate and can have a quality cup of coffee (or tea) if they visit our Tuesday morning One Stop Cafe. We also have a few other rewards, some donated by local businesses, to say thank you to our supporters.

How to get involved: If you would like to get involved in this project in other ways, e.g. through volunteering or participating in the activities or even starting up your own interest/self-help group with our support, then please get in touch.
