To expand the Parent & Carer Support Groups, Community Events & Workshops available at Makers Cafe, a vocational service in Central Scotland

by Scottish Autism in Alloa, Scotland, United Kingdom

About Us

Autism is a lifelong developmental condition affecting an individual’s ability to communicate, form relationships and understand everyday activities. Around 1 in every 100 people in Scotland is autistic, you may even know someone on the spectrum. Our mission is to enable autistic people to lead happy, healthy and fulfilling lives.

Makers Café

Makers is a Scottish Autism community hub delivering day and vocational opportunities for autistic people aged 16 +  who would otherwise lack opportunities to experience a supported working environment. The service houses a community cafe, shop and gallery, and a kitchen garden.

The Café has also been made available out with normal working hours for community groups to hold meetings and activities. In addition to this, we have also run some trial support sessions which offer support and advice as well as running a workshop for individuals to attend, we now hope to make these a permanent feature.

Parent and Carer Support Sessions

So far, we have hosted three individual, free to attend sessions from the Café which have been very well received. Initial feedback has been extremely positive from both staff and those who attended.  Facilitated by our experienced support staff, the sessions were set up to recognise that in addition to the families we currently provide direct support services to, there are many families and individuals we don’t reach that do not have access to peer and professional support networks.  A rolling programme of workshops, activities and support groups will further expand the support we offer in the area to individuals and families who currently receive little or no support.  We hope to secure funding to cover the cost of running the sessions to ensure they are available to anyone who wishes to attend as we do not want cost to be a barrier for individuals who wish to attend.

Development Workshops & Events

The workshops will be led by the needs and interests of the individuals who attend and the communities who access them.  Suggestions have included topics such as skills for future employment, navigating the workplace and a series of animated workshops. Funding would enable us to host a rolling programme of events and activities across the year that go a way to meeting the needs of autistic adults and people with a learning disability in the Forth Valley area. At Makers we can provide a welcoming and inclusive space to run accessible events and workshops that support personal growth and skills development opportunities which may not be otherwise available.
