To unlock the potential of all young people by bringing inspiring science, technology, engineering and maths to underserved communities.

by Cambridge Science Centre in Cambridge, England, United Kingdom

We've reached our target to visit one community - will you help us reach a target of £3,540 to visit two?

Cambridge Science Centre's vision is of a world where every child can experience adventures in science. We are the only year-round, interactive children’s science centre in the East of England.

With your support,  we want to expand our inspiring, hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths (STEM) Club, and take it out into the communities that need some extra support so that every child can experience adventures in science that inspire them to do well in their life and make a positive contribution to their communities.

Despite its reputation, Cambridge contains social mobility ‘cold spots’, where the education system fails to offer the best opportunities to children from lower income families. These ‘cold-spots’ exacerbate the issues uncovered by the ASPIRES Report, a cornerstone analysis of STEM learning, which shows that by the age of 11 years, the majority of young learners have decided that STEM is ‘not for me’.

In the 18 months prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Cambridge Science Centre had been developing and running an in-house STEM Club. Critically, it is our audience that lead the way through the weekly, one-hour sessions – transforming the learning from a presentation of facts into an exploration of problems and concepts.

Your donations will allow us to tour our STEM Club - Science of Everyday - around six underserved communities in the Cambridge area. We will offer each community six weeks of hands-on activities for young people aged 7-11. As local children and families get hands-on and take ownership of the activities and sessions, we'll deliver those life-changing “Wow!” moments that show that STEM is exciting, inclusive and can be ‘for them!’.

We will partner with existing community and youth groups or schools and deliver our club in the spaces that young people already know. We will work to form relationships with these community and youth groups, with the aim of visiting these communities each year with a new six week club and keep everyone engaged with shorter visits from our Community programme, including PopUpScience ( a one day set of shows held in a community space).

We are asking for £10,640 to visit all six communities. However, we can partner and deliver the club with one community for every £1,770 raised. If you're able, please don't forget to add Gift Aid.

Please help us reach out to underserved communities so additionally hard-struck by the educational damage caused by COVID-19 pandemic. Thank you.
