Would love to see you go for another four decades. Have put my donation in the name of the family member who introduced me to you - I've seen her books in your lovely shop many a time. How could we not support!?

My first holiday after retirement was a few days in the Landmark Trust property in Cromford and we visited Scarthin Books several times - such pleasure!

So important to keep these independent book shops open, they're our cave of wonders! When all the work is complete I'll switch on my trusty SatNav and venture up the M1 for a visit. All the best for a great project and well done for the amount you've raised so far, it's amazing!! [p.s. - don't fix it all too much, we like things a bit wonky...]

I was seven years old and living in Cromford when Scarthin Books opened. It was a wonderland and became my second home. My mum would leave me there indefinitely while she went shopping. All my pocket money was spent there. I went on to work in a book shop for a while and today I'm a copy editor. I still visit whenever I'm in Derbyshire. Scarthin Books inspired a lifelong love of books and words. More than happy to give something back.

I've not yet had the pleasure of visiting Scarthin Bookshop but couldn't pass an opportunity to help keep a clearly loved bookshop open. All the best! Stephen (Colugo Books)

There are too few independent bookshops left and I always enjoy visiting them. Hope this helps to keep yours open for many years to come. Good luck with the project!

And there was me thinking it was all held up by magic/stacks of books! Best of luck getting it sturdy for many decades (centuries, millennia?!) to come - a wonderful place and heart-warming to see the campaign doing so well. :)

So pleased you've got all this support....I for one would be heartbroken if Scarthin bookshop closed. All the best!!

Everyone should have access to a Scarthin's - it should be written in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights - the world would be a much better place!

Thanks to Scarthins from me, and also on behalf of everyone at the philosophy reading group who benefit from both the use of the facilities and from the erudite and entertaining contributions from David!

jane.zanker 6th April 2015

I was first introduced to Scarthins by my English Teacher, nearly 20 years on and I still enjoying discovering the treasures in your bookshop. I also got into Facebook this year and I LOVE your posts - thank you!

sam-evemy 5th April 2015

The world wouldn't be the same without lovely, old independent bookshops to browse - and it's great to have Scarthin's on the doorstep. I'd rather give my money to a project like this than lining the pockets of the Amazon fat cats! Good luck with raising the stretch target amount - sure you're gonna do it!

I have never visited but your children's room looks amazing. Keep us the great work - writers need bookshops! Will retweet.

Scarthin Books is one of my favourite places in the world... I rarely come home to Derbyshire without visiting at least once! A big thank you to whoever picks the books for the new fiction section, by the way. You've introduced me to so many authors whom I would never have discovered in one of the big chain bookshops or online...

isambardslad 31st March 2015

Keep up the irreplaceable work and shop! I have asked Mary Beard and Hugh Aldersey Williams and James McConnachie if they will re-tweet the appeal.

classicaldigger 27th March 2015

Such a wonderful and iconic place needs to be saved. It is always a pleasure to visit Scarthin. It is what bookshops should be like! Not just another identical mass produced high street store but one with a personality and a soul! Best wishes Cheuk and Nicola Wong

No brainer, this is what all book shops should be like! I've spent many a happy hour browsing through all the amazing books :-) All the best with the funding and lets get our shop mended! - Andy

nick-and-cathy-hobbs 26th March 2015

Spent many a happy hour in Scarthin books over the years - the children's book room, new and second hand books, wriggling past fellow browsers on the stairs... - remember Pledge 2000 when the vine grew though the shop? Wishing you all the very best. Love from the Hobbs family
