URGENTLY NEEDED specialist support for the huge POST-PANDEMIC wave of CHILDREN & YOUNG PEOPLE suffering with an EATING DISORDER

by Andy James in Kent, United Kingdom

EATING DISORDERS ARE DISTROYING YOUNG PEOPLE LIVES.... THEIR STORY'S IN THEIR OWN WORDS ARE TRULY HEARTBREAKING..

"we're....bombarded with messages from the media, magazines,  catwalks...even our best friends to be skinny......before you know it, you’re on nothing...I was on 1/2 a cup of bran flakes a day"                                                                                                                                                          Rubie

                                                                                                                                                         --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                                                                                                                                                                                     REWRITE YOUR STORY

EATING DISORDERS -

"Massive pressure from media to be slim and to be             perfect....surrounded by women in magazines that have been                    photoshopped"                                                                                                                                                                                             Sarah

Eating Disorders, and there are many different types, are when the sufferer will use food to try to manage their feelings. Eating Disorders are all controlling for the sufferer and their family. There is no single one cause, but the reasons people suffer with eating disorders can be multi-faceted and can include • unrelenting pressure from social media • pressure at school or at home • bullying • abuse • criticised for your body shape or eating habits • having difficult family relationships • having a job or hobby where being thin is seen as ideal.

They can also include • a vulnerability to depression and anxiety • finding stress hard to handle, • worrying a lot about the future • being a perfectionist • controlling your emotions • having obsessive or compulsive feelings • a fear of being fat.

Sufferers easily become addicted to the feelings of control they initially get from their unhealthy relationship with food but soon lose control of their lives as the eating disorder  takes over,  Rubie shut herself away and became isolated and ashamed. She lost all her friends to her eating disorder  as "they just didn’t understand".

"It was just me and my eating disorder....and I saw it as my only friend..."

                                                                                                 Rubie

Eating Disorders Kill - 1 in 5 women aged 16-24 will suffer from an eating disorder  and  20% of sufferers will die. Many will go on to have lifelong health issues such as kidney disease, heart disease, dental problem, infertility and osteoporosis and diabetes.

COVID IMPACT & THE AVOIDABLE DEATHS OF YOUNG PEOPLE

Regrettably, as a clear and direct result of COVID-19/Lockdowns, Rewrite Your Story have seen a huge Five-fold increase in requests for support from the parents or guardians of children as young as 9 years old.

Early intervention is critical in successful treatment and normally consists of monitoring a person’s physical health while addressing the underlying psychological problems with psychological therapy such as cognitive cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and family therapy.

With a 12-month waiting time for a GP referred Eating Disorders Hospital appointment not uncommon, the heart-breaking truth is that many young people across the UK will die - simply because of a lack of funding for the specialist eating disorder support Rewrite Your Story can provide.

               -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
