Matthews Yard is a leading independent creative hub in Croydon which opened in April 2012 in response to the riots. Originally a workspace and cafe, it grew according to the demands of the community to include a workspace, gallery, theatre, cafe and fully licensed restaurant and bar. A recognised Asset of Community Value it is now at risk after a planning application was submitted to demolish the building it is based in. While we remain hopeful that our original home can be secured, we are aware that the community is rarely successful in standing up to developers and we don't want to wait until the last minute to try and find a new home. For more information on what we have achieved so far, please view our impact report.
To find out what the local community thinks of our space, please read the comments on our change.org petition.
A premises in Exchange Square has become available and we have agreed terms with the existing leaseholder and landlord to take on the space. As a new organisation we can’t commit to taking it without your support. We need to raise £42,500 towards the costs of carrying out refurbishment work. The premises, currently known as The Exchange Workspace is already home to more than forty creative professionals and entrepreneurs and over a dozen businesses including the much loved Bobski's restaurant.
By taking over the space we will be able to add the following:
1. Pop-up Kitchen & Restaurant
The pop-up kitchen will be available for individuals and organisations to hire at low prices and will be the perfect space for your prep-kitchen, birthday party, supper club or other function which needs access to a decent, well-equipped kitchen in a central location.
2. The Studio: An intimate multi-function space for small events and rehearsals.
The Studio will provide a small rehearsals and event space suited for audiences of up to 40 people. While smaller than our community theatre, we believe this space will still prove popular among the community groups we work with.
3. The Library: A low-cost function room for meetings, events and social gatherings
This space will be available for hire by the hour and will be suited to round-table meetings for up to 10 people.
4. Art Gallery
We will relocate our art gallery to the new space, ensuring we continue to offer local emerging artists a platform to showcase and sell their work, risk free.
By supporting this Crowdfunder you can ensure the work Matthews Yard has done in building community in Croydon can continue while also choosing from a selection of rewards and benefits, as our way of saying thank you. Safeguarding this space is our top priority and will mean no matter what happens with the building at 5-9 Surrey Street, Matthews yard will continue to operate in the heart of Croydon for many years to come. If you have any questions at all, please don't hesitate to contact us.
All supporters of this crowdfunding campaign will be given membership of Matthews Yard. Our members are individuals drawn from across the community and include teachers, doctors, nurses, artists, designers, makers and entrepreneurs. Member fees are used to subsidise the cultural activities at Matthews Yard, supporting our community engagement initiative and to cover core operating costs. This is enough to entice many to be a member, while others choose to become members for the lucrative offers and discounts we offer from businesses that join the Matthews Yard family.
What is Save Matthews Yard?
Save Matthews Yard Limited is a non profit company, limited by guarantee. It doesn't have shareholders and all its profits will be reinvested into supporting local creatives by providing flexible and affordable space for them to work, rest and play. Operating since December, we already run the theatre, gallery and lounge at 1 Matthews Yard, but we now want to branch out to our own premises so we can do more for Croydon's creative community and secure our future regardless of what happens to the building we are currently in.
How will the money be spent?
The money raised will be used to complete refurbishment work on the premises enabling us to introduce some cool new creative spaces to Croydon.
Is the space sustainable and viable?
Yes. We will be taking over this space from The Exchange Workspace Limited, the current leaseholder. It is struggling financially as it started the project with no capital. Despite cash flow shortages, the space already has more than £70k of contracted income from current users and that's before we bring the other parts into use through this crowdfunding campaign.
By crowdfunding the money for the fit-out, the revenues from existing clients will ensure all day to day operating costs can be met immediately. The last major crowdfunding drive Matthews Yard did was to create the studio theatre. Less than £10k was raised and MY made it go a long way. Please, back us today, so we can continue to deliver for Croydon's creative scene for many more years to come.
