Dunelm House is a building at risk. Help us save this important part of the North Easts modern heritage before it is too late.

One of the great buildings in the UK and a legacy of the late Dickie Raines
Can't bear to see another great building let go...good luck!
I am right behind it!
I fully support preserving this iconic building
A building of real beauty in an area of so many protected buildings. As an engineer focused on building a new modern world in the Middle East, it's great to the endeavour to save something of our own in the North East! Best of luck. Drew Tinsley https://www.linkedin.com/in/drew-tinsley-mep/
Great building.
It would be unforgivable if Durham University demolished Dunelm House. The walk over Kingsgate Bridge past Dunelm House and on to the wonderful Victoria Inn would never be the same.
Can't help feeling like the building would be much more appreciated if Durham Uni had an architecture department, the students don't realise how spoilt they are, I mean, have they seen Northumbria Students Union? I do think it would be good to get the architecture departments at both Northumbria and Newcastle involved though.
Just save Dunelm House!! Good luck.
This is one of the great postwar buildings, unique to Durham. It must be saved and carefully restored.
This building is not just important to those who shared its history but to those who will hopefully see its future
Just unthinkable that Dunelm House could be lost. This building must be saved.
The Modernist Movement is our heritage like it or not and we need to acknowledge that.
Keep up the great campaign folks!
Iconic building too precious to lose
As the case for demolition is mostly about cost, even if repair and adaptation costs up to the cost of a new building, this is justified to a) retain in the city, a special type of building, b) be more carbon efficient as the existing structure will be retained and c) avoid serious traffic disruption at an existing bottle-neck.
Dunelm House should of course be saved, but a charette may be of limited value in this objective. What will be needed is the development of a detailed understanding of the issues involved through close and meaningful dialogue with relevant personnel at the University and other key stakeholders.
I first visited this building in 1967 and loved it. Never saw it again until 1984 when I moved to Durham, but still loved it. A perfect example of a building fitting happily into its surroundings, complementing them and looking as if it was meant to be there - as indeed it was, by Ove Arup.
An architectural gem acting as a counter foil to its UNESCO cathedral neighbour
I loved this building when I was living in Durham and still do
keep going!
Keep up the invaluable work. It would be unforgivable if Dunelm House was lost. Best wishes, Philip
