SASH is a local charity working across York, North Yorkshire and East Yorkshire. Our aim is to prevent vulnerable young people aged 16-25 from facing homelessness by offering them a room in the home of a volunteer host. We provide an emergency accommodation service, Nightstop and Supported Lodgings project for young people who need somewhere long term to stay.
We are different to other homeless charities in that we try to be the solution to the problem before the young person turns to homelessness. We believe that the best place for a vulnerable young person to be is in a safe and caring environment.
Once referred, we can quickly place the young person in a volunteer host's home through our Nightstop service. They get their own bedroom, dinner, a hot shower and breakfast in the morning. We can provide this service for up to two weeks whilst we work with other service providers to ensure that the young person does not become homeless and that a positive outcome is reached. In 2015-16 we provided 1314 nights of emergency accommodation to 257 young people.
Should the situation not be rectified we have our Supported Lodgings project which allows a young person to stay in a volunteer's home for up to 2 years. At any given time we can have up to 60 young people in this program. Here we work closely with the young person and their host to ensure that they are supported in a way that enables them to move on to live independently succesfully. They learn skills such as how to pay bills, cooking, budgeting, decorating and more. When they are ready to move on, we assist with finding somewhere to live, setting it up and provide floating support until they are settled. We have great success with our Supported Lodgings program, with 36 of those moving on last year being in education, work or training.
In order to be able to continue our essential work we need to fundraise over £100,000 every year through Community Fundraising. To make the most of our fundraising activities, awareness raising and events, we need fundraising materials to be able to sell at a profit and to provide free of charge to our amazing fundraisers. The items that we sell the most of and that also raise awareness, are our wristbands. To maximise the amount raised we are seeking funding to purchase a large quantity of these to stock in local shops and to to sell at our various events.
By covering the costs of these materials, we can ensure that 100% of the money raised will go back towards helping us to continue our preventing youth homelessness in our community. Each year we help around 400 young people who are facing homelessness. Will you help us to prevent youth homelessness, together?
