Rail Sale 4 Change (RS4C) is an initiative to raise funds for a number of grassroots charities. In the first of the official RS4C series, we are delighted to announce we will be supporting Safe Passage International.
Every year, thousands of child refugees arrive in Europe, almost half of them are unaccompanied and as a result, are at risk of being abused and trafficked. Many of these children lost their only legal route to travel safely when the UK Government decided not to provide a viable alternative to EU family reunification laws, which ended on 31 Dec 2020.
This decision means hundreds of unaccompanied asylum-seeking children will instead turn to people smuggling gangs to assist them with traveling to Britain, placing them at greater risk of trafficking.
Beth Gardiner-Smith, chief executive of Safe Passage International, said: “Children alone in Europe are sleeping rough in the snow, in derelict buildings and tents in overcrowded camps. Leaving the EU doesn't mean we must turn our back on these children."
Safe Passage helps reunite refugee children with family members in Europe who can love and provide for them. Legal routes to sanctuary helps ensure these children are not abused and trafficked while seeking safety, love, and an opportunity to restart their lives. Offering legal aid, support post-arrival (e.g. arranging local GP services, school applications etc.), as well as political advocacy and grassroots campaigning.
On 26th January 2021, The Independent published this article stating Britain has closed its door on unaccompanied child refugees.
We, RS4C, aim to raise our funds through raising awareness on the work this organisation, Safe Passage, does and by running an online clothing sale via Instagram & Facebook: @RailSale4Change.
