Hi my name is Rosa, I have an autoimmune disorder called Lupus, which currently has no cure, and fibromyalgia which is a chronic pain/fatigue condition. I have been suffering from increasing symptoms for at least a year, but in early August, I stopped being able to walk.
I suffer from severe joint and muscle pains, debilitating fatigue, fevers, continuous migraine headaches that causes nausea and dizziness, and rashes and headaches within minutes of going into the sun without cover. I have ended up bed-bound for many months. Not only have I been unable to get out of my flat over the past couple of months, I have also been stuck upstairs in my bedroom: I live on the second floor of my block of flats in Wallington, and we do not have a lift! In order for me to even get out and about I need to be carried down the stairs and then taken everywhere in an old transit wheelchair, which leaves me in even more pain, as it is very unsupportive on uneven or even slightly rough pavement.
I also suffer from panic attacks and anxiety which has become considerably worse since I became so ill and was confined to my bedroom.
I am hoping to raise money to help me buy an electrically powered wheelchair. By December or January, I will be moving to a wheelchair accessible flat too, thanks to a social housing exchange scheme, so if I have a wheelchair I can get outside. It would be amazing to be able to do things I used to do, with a chair that doesn't cause me further pain: to go outside and see nature again and to go to the park (yes, even in the winter!) and see people. It will enable me to travel around and regain my independence again. I would like to buy a wheelchair like the one below, which will offer support and be sturdy enough to travel over grass and pavement without causing me lots of pain.
This will also mean I may be able to get back to my studies when I am slightly better (I was a funded postgrad physics student at King's College London, and currently my income has been stopped until I can return). I have no other way of raising this money as I am already struggling to make ends meet. I live in social housing and my mum is unable to work due to a long term illness. By helping me raise my target, it will mean I can get back to earning money and get out and about and start living my life again, which has come to a standstill. Most of you know how much I used to love going out, getting involved with social and poltiical activities and with university, please help me to do all that again :)
Thank you to everyone who helps, even a little bit will make such a big difference, it means so much to me and I am so grateful to the wonderful people I have around me :)
More info on Lupus:
Lupus is a complex and poorly understood condition that affects many parts of the body and causes symptoms ranging from mild to life-threatening. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) can affect many parts of the body, including the skin, joints and internal organs. Many people will have long periods with few or no symptoms before experiencing a sudden flare-up, where their symptoms are particularly severe. Even mild cases can be distressing and have a considerable impact on a person’s quality of life.
SLE is an autoimmune condition, which means it is caused by problems with the immune system. For reasons not yet understood, the immune system in people with SLE starts to attack and inflame healthy cells, tissue and organs.
There is currently no cure for SLE, but there are different medications that can help relieve many of the symptoms and reduce the chances of organ damage.
Lupus also often comes with Fibromyalgia, which causes widespread chronic fatigue and pain throughout the body, in addition to the fatigue and pain caused by Lupus.
