About the project
We are two brothers who are currently setting up an independent artisan coffee roastery in our home town in Surrey. We recently bought our stunning 1kg Dalian Amazon roaster which all of our coffee will be roasted on.
Our coffee will be available to buy at various different markets and events in Surrey and Sussex, as well as through our website which is still being designed. In addition to this we hope to obtain a number of wholesale customers such as local independent coffee shops and cafés.
Fundamental to us is the ability to trace all of our coffee back to its origin country, including the farm and even the farmers name. We were amazed to find out that there are more flavour notes within speciality coffee than the finest and most expensive wines. Coffee is much more complex than people often perceive it to be.
My name is Sean , I'm 19 years old and the youngest of four brothers. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 10 and this made life very difficult, especially once I left school and started working. My condition is controlled by having to inject insulin and test my blood sugars several times a day. I found this exceptionally difficult in the workplace where research shows that 1 in 6 people with diabetes are discriminated against. Some senior members of staff didn't understand the importance of having to do this and this made working with diabetes not just exhausting and stressful but potentially life threatening. I therefore decided to join the Prince’s Trust to participate in a Business Enterprise Course with my brother and this has now given me the confidence I need to turn my passion for coffee into hopefully something much bigger.
I’m Jamie, the second eldest of four brothers, and at the age of one I was diagnosed with Chronic Eczema which I’ve struggled with throughout my life. I found managing my skin condition in the workplace, with no understanding from senior staff, extremely difficult and as a result, have been unable to hold down a job. There is very little understanding of Chronic Eczema and the impact it has on the individual as it's not just a case of applying a bit of cream and it goes away. Whilst trying to work a 'regular' job I found it impossible to maintain my skin and experienced bouts of depression due to the stress my employers put on me. This in turn exacerbated my skin condition as stress is a big trigger factor and I found myself in a vicious circle. Having a shared passion for coffee, my brother and I therefore decided we wanted to set up our own business. This lead us to the ‘Prince’s Trust’ where we have been attending a Business Enterprise Course which has really helped to build my confidence in being able to set up our own business.
As a result of our conditions and the lack of awareness surrounding them, we both feel very passionate about supporting the following charities once we have launched the business:
- Diabetes UK
- The National Eczema Society
- We have both found these charities to be useful sources of information and a great support to us.
What are we up to at the moment ?
We are currently attending meetings at the Prince's Trust to talk with our mentor and work through our business plan, this is to prepare us for the Business Launch Group where we will pitch our idea to a panel of judges (sort of like Dragons' Den) to gain support from our mentor for a further 2 years. In our spare time we are concentrating on learning and mastering the skill of artisan roasting to craft the best possible flavour profiles out of each of our coffees.
What are our future plans ?
- One of our main goals is to open our own coffee shop in the local area and supply it with our own roasted coffee.
- As our business grows we would like to be able to relocate to bigger premises.
- To purchase a 5kg roaster (keeping our 1kg roaster for smaller orders)
How will we use the money raised ?
The money raised will help towards paying for the following :
- Sample coffee roaster (to evaluate the quality and uniformity of the coffee before committing to buy large quantities)
- Retail coffee grinder (to grind to our customers' requirements)
- Green coffee beans
We are both super excited and can't wait to get started.
If you have any questions about the project or want to know more - please don't hesitate to get in touch.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and also for any donations no matter how big or small.
Kind Regards - Jamie & Sean
