Please help me fund my second year on the prestigious master's course in children's book illustration at Cambridge School of Art
Completing this course and taking part in the final show is my best chance of a meaningful career which makes use of my artistic talents and can fit around my family. I want to devote my life to creating stories for parents and children to share. Please help me to achieve that goal and become the best illustrator I can possibly be. I have been working towards this goal for years, taking short courses at Cambridge, Chelsea and Blake colleges.
My first year on the course has been spent exploring observational drawing, and sequential imagery. I spent the first semester drawing from life, exploring tone, colour, mark making and composition. The second semester was spent developing a wordless sequence telling the story of the 'Hedge Lion'. The pictures on this page are taken from that story. It started as the tale of my walk to school to collect my older children with my toddler in tow. Then I started to think of all the funny things my toddler does along that walk, and what she might think is happening that I simply can't see with my adult eyes. That developed into the tale of the friendship between a toddler and a hedge lion and an oblivious mother.
I am doing the MA part time as I also work as a theatre designer and care for my three young children alongside my studies. I have loved my years working in theatre. They have given me a great sense for visual storytelling, but I want to retrain in order to be able to create my own work and tell my own stories.
I am so passionate about this work, I currently am averaging a distinction and the progression in my drawing in just one year has amazed me. I have recieved messages from people in the industry that suggest I could have a bright future as an illustrator once I have completed my training, I just need some help getting there.
On top of the tuition costs there are many expenses including my travel to Cambridge each week, art materials and printing costs. Every contribution to help me retrain will be massively appreciated.
