Snappy Road Safety

A project with disabled young people learning about road safety, bike safety and getting around a city.

We would take groups of ten young people each time and take them through the process of getting from one side of the City of York to the other.

In the last year we have seen many road accidents involving young people.  And very often we see a lack of attention when young people are out and about, headphones in, phones and maybe just talking with friends.

These dangers are doubled when that young person is disabled. They may have little or no awareness of traffic, lights, and or timings crossing major and minor roads.

We would like to host workshops over a 6 week period each time with road safety at the center . The young people would learn about traffic speed limits , safe crossings , and being out and about in the dark .

We would also incorporate cycle safety. York is a major cycle city and we do have bikes adapted for our young people. It is difficult to be out and about without lead riders and whilst we would still have the leads, the young people would be upskilled enough to feel confident.

Each group would spend 3 hours each week with leaders working on site and in the city. We would invite local road safety campaigners in to speak to the group and have the young people record their journey for facebook and website.
