Imagine visiting Langdale fifty years from now. There's two alternatives. One: a procession of cars, nowhere to park, a valley sucked dry of wildlife and unable to cope with climate change. Two: electric minibuses take visitors to see new woodland and wildlife reserves in a valley where natural processes are valued, and encouraged to take their course. This vision of sustainability can be achieved, and is already happening on the 'other side' of the Lake District in Ennerdale. But Langdale is a tourist mecca... a much more challenging place to make the second alternative a reality.
The funding will go to start the Re/Wild Langdale ball rolling - launching the project, setting up local meetings, lobbying landowners and regional and national organisation; setting up an expert advisory group - and developing long-term sustainable management plans.
